For almost eight years, TIBM has been trying to share the hope and wholeness of Christ with its neighborhood. So it is with mixed emotions that we will NOT have our annual Neighbor Day Festival this year. Typically the most well-attended outreach event we host in the neighborhood, Neighbor Day Festival has been a big block party with lots of food, fun activities, and entertainment, along with the sharing of Jesus’s teaching to love your neighbor. This year, TIBM had an uphill battle trying to organize things (limited funds and very limited manpower being two of the bigger obstacles).
After prayer and reflection on our goals for the neighborhood ministry, we decided that Neighbor Day 2011 was not in line with the directions we sense God giving us. In particular, we felt that we would not be able to put together a quality block party with long-lasting impact.
However, we plan to try a different event later in August or at the beginning of September. We are still in the process of planning this event & finalizing a date, but our theme so far is centered on God’s blessings. We hope the event will be a time for our neighborhood to gather in thanksgiving for God’s blessings in our lives and to ask Him to continue to bless our community. Pray that in the next few weeks, TIBM will be able to effectively harness the neighbors’ energy and enthusiasm for Neighbor Day Festival into participating in a different event which will better facilitate ministry among all generations of neighbors.
Please also pray specifically for Katherine and Jeri to find different ways to continue and deepen relationships as summer ends and winter sneaks in. Pray that TIBM will bless the nations living in our neighborhood. Please also pray that we as individuals and as a team would allow our ministries to be led by the Spirit rather than by routine, tradition or people’s expectations.
We will post updates on the “non-block party” event in the comments section below.
